Useful tips when buying bathroom suites

Here are a few tips that might come in handy when your buying your next bathroom suite:

  • You need to check carefully what items of sanitary ware you are getting in the price. A four piece bathroom suite may, in fact, only refer to a sink with its separate bowl and pedestal and a toilet with its bowl and cistern. Together, these can make up what is referred to as a four piece set.
  • Beware that with most lower cost bathroom suites the bath-tub will be made from pressed plastic. Very cheap bathroom suites can be made from very thin plastic which can result in damage and scratching. Higher price suites are generally made from porcelain, a high quality and very durable material. A definite case of pay your money take your choice! Economy suites can prove to be a false economy in the long run.
  • Fee standing baths are very popular. It is important to take careful measurement of your bathroom space to ensure you have sufficient space to accommodate it.
  • A white suite is still the most popular colour being easy to match with any bathroom furniture and fittings, and blend with whatever décor you may choose.

Once you have decided on your bathroom suite you can turn your attention to sourcing bathroom furniture such as bathroom mirrors, bathroom televisions, bathroom accessories and bathroom tiles.

All of these ideas are available to view at Ocean Bathroom’s fully working showroom. We also offer a full Bathroom design and planning service in which you can create your dream luxury bathroom in a 3-dimensional model. The screen based planning gives a great visual idea of what your bathroom will look like before you make a final decision.

Planning a New Bathroom

Friday, January 15th, 2010
Before your new bathroom

Before - Your New Bathroom

Designing and planning a new bathroom can be an interesting challenge. Careful planning and research is the key to success with any new bathroom or refit. Bathrooms are usually the smallest room in the house, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style.

Here are some handy hints and design tips to get you started:

Measuring Your Bathroom

It is extremely important when measuring up your new bathroom that you note the position of the existing plumbing services (water supplies, water and soil outlets), windows and doors. Wherever possible try and design to make use of existing plumbing - it can be costly and time-consuming to re-route the water supply and waste pipes.

Decide on the list of items you want included in your bathroom suite, bath and/or shower/wet room, hand basin, WC and bidet and if you can, sketch it out on a sheet of paper. It is easy to get standard dimensions for most items so why not create a version on paper first, trying out different layouts and see how they work for you.

Working from a visual drawing will help to determine if the space could be better used – consider for instance that the minimum space required between a basin or WC which face each other is 60cm.

It is also important to consider those who may use the room. Do you, for instance, need to make special adaptations or provision for young children, the elderly or the disabled.

Fixtures & Fittings

After - Your New Bathroom

After - Your New Bathroom

Don’t forget to consider the fixtures and fittings. It is very easy to forget that you might need a heated towel rail when you are planning for instance - and suddenly you have no space to put one in.

Think about:-

Where are you going to store all of the essentials that go with a bathroom such as toiletries, towels and cleaning products?

For those of you that want the ultimate in designer bathrooms, you can now even choose from a collection of Waterproof LCD Televisions that are designed to be installed and integrated into a Bathroom, Shower or Wet Room and can be operated without a remote control.

Decorating Your Bathroom

When it comes to decorating a bathroom that are many options. Most leading paint manufacturers now sell paint specifically designed for the damp, moist conditions of bathrooms.

Bathroom tiles are also very practical, hard wearing, easy to clean, waterproof and hygienic. They are available in various materials and you will find a wide range of options for walls and floors.  You can buy individual tiles or decorative bathroom wall panelling.

Rules and Regulations when Installing a Bathroom

There are strict regulations when it comes to installing equipment in a bathroom. For instance:-

  • Only a competent, certified electrician should be used to install lighting and other electrics in a bathroom. And there should be no electrical points other than approved ones.
  • External ventilation is required for a bathroom and WC, typically an automatic extractor fan and duct is connected to the outside.
  • If the only bathroom in a dwelling leads off a bedroom, it must have another access door other than through the bedroom.
  • A room containing a WC must be separated by ‘a door’ from any area used for the preparation of food.

Planning Your New Bathroom

Planning a new bathroom is an exciting time, but it also brings with it a myriad of things to think about.

Ocean Bathrooms is always pleased to offer professional advice to ensure you get the perfect bathroom for your home. We offer a full Bathroom Design and Planning service that will help you make informed decisions before spending any money.

Hansgrohe Puravida on Doctor Who

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Doctor How meets Hansgrohe PuraVida

Doctor How meets Hansgrohe PuraVida

The beady eyed amongst you may have noticed a recent Doctor Who episode showcasing the Puravida, the latest mixer collection from Hansgrohe.

The latest “Waters of Mars” epsiode featured the David Tennant Doctor wandering through a bio-dome on a Mars Space Station, surrounded by plants, flowers, vegetables and birds. Set amidst the flora, and the focal point for the source of water on the planet was the dual white and chrome PuraVida basin mixer.

The BBC production team in Cardiff first contacted a Hansgrohe retail customer in early 2009 and suggested a brief to track down a stylish and futuristic looking design that would completely suit a Doctor Who episode set in the year 2059.

Over 9 million people watched the episode on Sunday 15th November which proved to be a great arena to show-off the PuraVida design. The working mixer made in lacquered white and shiny chrome supplied for the show was sourced specially from Hansgrohe in Germany prior to the range going into full production.

Hansgrohe PuraVida Design

You may have seen our recent blog post on the Hansgrohe PuraVida range. Hansgrohe teamed up with a group of designers from Duravit and Phoenix Design to create a range of faucets that compliment the beautiful Duravit Puravida Bathroom Collection that means you can achieve a flawless look throughout your bathroom.

With no sharp angles or corners, the soft rounded shapes of the PuraVida collection helps to create a relaxed feel and cries out to be touched. The spray former disappears into the underside of the spout, giving the impression that the water appears to come from nowhere, flowing into the basin as a calm and clear laminar jet simply picking up on the overall pure appearance. The jet angle can easily be adapted by just moving it with the finger to the respective basin shape.

Doctor Who Waters of Mars

The doom and gloom scenes played out in the “Waters of Mars” Doctor Who episode may well present a stark contrast to the beautiful design features of the Hansgrohe PuraVida - and who knows what basin taps and mixers we might be using come 2059!

Heated Bathroom Mirrors

Heated Bathroom Mirrors

Mirrors have evolved over the centuries from a luxury item to a household fixture which is now taken for granted in daily use. There is now a vast selection of mirrors on the market to choose from, however, bathroom mirrors in particular are now a high-tech item with built in technology features.

You can buy well designed backlit mirrors to provide bright and invigorating lighting to your bathroom. Illuminated LED bathroom mirrors are very stylish and produce a warm cosy feel and subtle mood lighting can be activated by a clever infra-red on/off sensor switch.

To minimise clutter in your bathroom, toiletries can be stored away in classy and exclusively designed cabinet mirrors. Cabinet mirrors are supplied in various shapes and sizes with LED lighting and adjustable shelving.

After a warm shower or hot bath, bathroom mirrors can become obscured by steam. To eliminate this problem, you can now purchase a mirror that incorporates a heated demister pad to prevent steamed up glass. You no longer need to spend time wiping your mirror with a towel in the morning.

It is important when choosing a bathroom mirror to ensure it is IP44 rated for safe use within bathrooms and wet room environments.

Bathroom and Wet Room Underfloor Heating

Saturday, November 7th, 2009
Underfloor Heating Comfort

Underfloor Heating Comfort

The trend for bathroom tiled floors has taken bath times to new heights of luxury. Hard wearing, hygenic and easy to clean tiles are becoming the preferred choice for most bathroom floors. Tiled floors look great, but as the days turn colder you will soon notice how unpleasnat it is to walk on a cold tiled floor first thing in the morning.

Underfloor heating for bathrooms is the ideal solution to offer more than just warmth and comfort - they are designed to be extremely energy efficient. Most people think that underfloor heating is expensive to install and run - but you will be surprised just how cheap they are to run. Partner your under floor heating with a Designer Bathroom Radiator or heated towel rail and you have the perfect set up.

The latest bathroom underfloor heating solutions use a “knitted electrical element mat design” that works similar to an electric blanket. Easy to install, the mat is simply rolled out on a fixed sub-board and then tiled over. A typical installation in a standard sized bathroom can be done in a day.

As well as giving you a lovely warm floor, the heat generated will drift upwards and contribute to the room temperature. Add a temperature controller (thermostat) and timer to your system and you can even have the heating coming on when you get up in the morning.

The Devimat Underfloor Heating systems are perfect as underfloor heating for Wet Rooms as they help to dry out the tiled floor and stop moisture build up.

How Underfloor Heating Works

Todat’s underfloor heating solutions use a radiant heating method - low temperature electric heating elements that can be installed under laminate flooring or tiles to give you a more natural, comfortable indoor warmth at low costs and without the need for radiators. Underfloor heating mats are suitable in most situations even wet rooms. They can be used on any sub floor and with any floor covering, including tiles, carpet, wood, laminate, linoleum, and Amtico. Mats are usually designed to heat a fixed sized room, so once you have your bathroom dimensions simply choose the appropriate sized mat that will suit your dimensions and configuration.

The underfloor heating mats have the heating elements woven into a mat making them easy and quick to install. Simply roll the mat out on to the floor and cover it with a latex self-levelling compound before the tiling goes down. The mats are supplied in a range of sizes and power outputs -and are designed so that it generates a certain amount of heat output, measured in “Watts”, per unit area, when installed according to manufacturer’s guidelines. Heat output per unit area varies from cable to cable, typically from around 75w/m2, which may be suitable for wood or laminated floors, to 200w/m2 which generates the extra heat required in wet rooms (but should only be used beneath stone or tiled floors).

Most systems are compatible with digital thermostat and timer controls so you can control the temperature and when you want your heating to come on and go off - even set different times for the weekend and when you go away on holiday.

Wet Room Underfloor Heating

Although you might not think it, wet rooms are a logical choice for electric underfloor heating. It can be used to provide the primary heat source or just in one area where you want a cosy drying area.. And because it is invisible it does not detract from the space available or the interior design of your bathroom..

Electric underfloor heating can be installed in most wet rooms with the added benefit of significantly reducing the drying time of the floor. You do need to make careful consideration to the insulation, if installing on a timber, or a concrete subfloor. Concrete in particular, will dissipate heat very quickly if not properly insulated, so insulation board is usually installed onto the subfloor, before the underfloor heating mat is put in place.

The wet room underfloor heating set up with sub-board, insulation board, heating element then tiles usually means the floor of a wet room will be raised slighlty. So it is worth taking this into consideration when you are designing your wet room space.

Controlling your Underfloor Heating

Modern electric underfloor heating cables feature twin conductors, so there is usually only one connection required to a programmable electronic controller. The systems are usually installed in conjunction with a room thermostat and temperature sensor that is installed in the floor before tiling, which allows the temperature to be regulated.

In wet rooms, the floor sensor will normally be installed in the wet area but wired to a programmable room thermostat in an adjacent dry area such as a landing or hallway.

Add that extra warmth element to your bathroom this Winter with underfloor heating. Call us on 01308 420011 for more information and discussing your requirements.

The Problem: ‘When we began renovating our house, we soon realised that the one thing it lacked was a large family bathroom, and with two small sons that was absolutely essential. We’d been in London for years and longed to move to the country. We looked at Devon and found this house.

‘The whole place needed renovating and we wanted to be as eco-conscious as possible. Having thought hard about what we needed, we decided the best option was to sacrifice a guest bedroom and create our dream family bathroom.’

What we did:

‘Right from the outset, we knew the bathroom would be a challenge, as the space had once had a fireplace in the corner. As a result, one of the walls was uneven and there was no plumbing connected in here.

‘It was not a large room and we wanted it to feel as spacious as possible, so we decided to get professional design advice. We enlisted the help of Joe Mühl, the senior interior designer at Ocean Bathrooms. This is a local firm that sells bathroom fittings with an eco focus.

Joe created a computer-generated layout for us, to give us a sense of what the finished bathroom would look like. We were then able to make suggestions before we settled on the final design.

‘Our main priorities were to have a luxury bathtub, a double shower cubicle and twin washbasins. As we wanted to include the latest energy and water-saving fittings, we were really pleased to discover that there were plenty of stylish options available.

‘We chose special water-saving showerheads, called Raindance from Hansgrohe. Hi-tech air injection makes the water droplets larger for a really luxurious feel and the result is that it uses around ten per cent less water than a standard showerhead.

We also chose water-saving taps and a chromatherapy spa bath by Airbath. This has built-in colour-changing lights for a relaxing effect– an extra touch of luxury.

‘In order to save money, Malcolm did all the stripping out and the first fix on the taps, basins and toilet, as a while back he’d done a plumbing course. But we needed new plumbing and a soil pipe installed as well, so Ocean Bathrooms put us in contact with Mark Howells’ design team to complete the installation.

The twin showers were fitted in a glassfronted enclosure designed to fit in the far corner, which works well with the awkward shape of the wall there.‘We also hired a local carpenter and tiler to work unsupervised and so save us commuting back and forth from London.
Using our car less helped us to keep the project as eco-friendly as possible, too.

‘Before we decided to move out to Devon for an all-new lifestyle, we both had jobs in the city that involved a lot of foreign travel. We loved the luxury feel of the hotels where we’d stayed during business trips.’ The couple decided they wanted to recreate the hotel bathroom style in their new family home.

‘Limestone tiles were our preferred choice for the floor and walls, but we didn’t want the room to look bland, so we added some striking green glass tiles and smaller limestone mosaics to create contrast and texture.‘I couldn’t find a unit that I liked for our twin basins to sit on, so we had our local carpenter custom-make a washstand for us to fit the space. The tiler then finished it with tile sheets with small green glass mosaics, matching the stripe that runs right round the room.

‘The bathroom took about a year to completely convert and install, but as the rest of the house was being renovated at the same time before we moved in, it wasn’t a problem. And Malcolm and I are both really pleased with the result.‘We set out to create a large, luxurious family bathroom with the highest possible eco spec – and that’s exactly what we’ve achieved. The bathroom is every bit as stylish and relaxing as the ones we remember from hotels on our travels.
And all our guests love it, too.

‘A bathroom like this was never going to be cheap, but we think it was worth every penny.’

Bespoke Sink Unit

Liz and Malcolm wanted the stand for their twin basins to tie in with the rest of the bathroom, but couldn’t find anything they liked on the high street. Instead, they asked their local carpenter to build one from scratch. It’s fixed to the wall at the back and has two oak legs at the front, and it’s finished with glass tiles to match the border round the room. To find a carpenter in your area, try www.ratedpeople.com

No Taps Bath

For a double-ended bath, a combined filler and waste – an aperture in the side of the tub with its controls separate– can often be more practical than spout taps. Liz and Malcolm’s luxury bath, with a diverter for the shower and a concealed mixer valve, cost over£2,400. They also splashed out £345 for the optional extra of underwater chromatherapy spa-style lighting.

Although the walls and floor have been tiled using large-format natural stone, the side of the bath and the shower enclosure are finished in the same stone but in a mosaic form, to add interest. Small rectangular glass tiles have then been added for the border round the room and the basin stand.
